WarmCore Bi Fold Doors: The material debate


That’s material as in timber / UPVC / aluminium or a combination that we are referring to.

All forms of doors and windows have evolved through time and the availability of materials but the Bi- fold door is probably a little different from most – it’s a concept that has been around for a long time the Romans the Greeks the Chinese all historically used forms of folding screens which are the forerunners of what we now call the Bi fold door.

Some of the first Bi fold doors as we understand them were used by Continental Shop and Café owners to open up their premises when weather permitted expanding their sales area into the adjoining street generally they were not dissimilar to their predecessors in as much as they were of a hinged timber leaf construction, later to be replaced by Aluminium as it became the “in vogue” material to be used in the design of shop fronts – although acceptable for shop fronts these bi-folds were far from universally accepted by the more discerning domestic household market. Timber – the most natural of all products they always look good because they are natural but they are generally the one that is the most expensive – the same reasons of warp/ rot/ maintenance etc that caused the move away from timber to UPVC windows and doors plus the demand for slim line features, timber although beautiful when the unit is of the highest quality material, will find it harder to compete unless your door is intended purely for internal use.

PVCU – tried tested competitively priced works well for doors and windows so why would it not be just as ideal for bi-fold doors – the answer is dependent upon what you compare UPVC too and as the most common competitor material in bi-fold manufacture is –

Aluminium – like UPVC it has been around in the Door/window markets forever and as it can be extruded / machined to precise sections it is now available in slim line sections and the revolution in coating techniques has certainly upgraded its image from the unappealing grey to literally whatever you want.

So when choosing between UPVC and Aluminium what points should the householder take into consideration.

  • History – Aluminium bi-fold doors as a commercial product have a history for this form of use – UPVC is pretty new to the market.
  • Size /manufacturing tolerance – Bi-fold doors to work well have to be pretty precisely engineered to very accurate sizes and UPVC because it is fusion welded (simplistically the sections are heated and melted together) currently does not have the ability to match aluminium when it comes to finished tolerance size. there is always a greater degree of finished size tolerance compared with Aluminium. A point to consider and illustrate the point many aeroplanes are manufactured from Aluminium but how many do we know that are manufactured from UPVC
  • Expansion / contraction – to work well bi-fold doors require to be pretty inert when it comes to temperature differentials – UPVC both expands and contract to a much greater degree than Aluminium when subject to temperature change – with the possibility of causing expanding and sticking in the summer when you want to open your doors and shrinking and possibly allowing draughts in the colder winter months.
  • Maximum overall size – for the reasons stated above manufacturing tolerances and expansion / contraction there are currently limitations as to the size of UPVC bi-door if tolerance/expansion/contraction issues are to be avoided these doors are best limited to in the order of 4m wide x 2.25m high – there are no such limitations with aluminium – size is governed simply by that of the opening that it is required to be filled
  • Glazing -with glass weights that can be up to 120kg of glass per leaf if larger designs are chosen the aluminium profile door will generally accommodate such weight due to its manufactured strength and rigidity whereas the UPVC unit will generally require the introduction of more leaves therefore somewhat defeating the unrestricted view when the door is closed.
  • Security and fixings – One is metal one is plastic one is rigid and difficult to cut without professional tools the other can be cut with a “Stanley knife and screw driver combo”. One has the fittings and fixtures attached using precision engineered screws which fix directly to the frame and can be removed and replaced countless times without detrimental effect – the other relies upon “self-tapping” screws finding a purchase on the metal reinforcement of the unit and once removed screws are difficult to relocate.Both UPVC and Aluminium bi- folds have their place both will perform adequately if specified in the correct location –But there is now a further alternative – A COMPOSITE BI-FOLD DOOR- a bi- fold door with a UPVC core set inside a Aluminium frame –
